THE NCAE
CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
The Center for Teaching and
Learning (CTL) provides a variety of resources for NCAE staff
and members.
The CTL has resources covering topics related to the classroom,
such as Authentic Assessment, Inclusion, Strategies for Diverse
Learners, Reading Across the Curriculum, Block Scheduling, and
many others. They provide resources to local associations on
issues such as NCLB, state and federal policies impacting
educators and their students, pre-service teachers and student
members, new and veteran teacher support, instructional tips,
closing the achievement gap, administrator support, the School
Improvement Team, teacher evaluations, and more.
Additionally, the CTL provides frequent updates on the work of
the State Board of Education, which can be found on our website.
We assist local associations, LEAs, and individual schools with
professional development opportunities in response to their
targeted needs. We also assist members with licensure concerns
and/or questions.

Development
The NCAE Center for Teaching and Learning is proud to provide
members skill sets that meet the National Staff Development
Council’s standards as adopted by the State Board of Education.
Many NCAE members, along with NCAE staff, are part of various
teams that have been trained to deliver quality staff
development for your school, your NCAE Local, and/or NCAE
Cluster.

Supporting Future Teachers in Obtaining Licensure: NCAE
Praxis Series Workshops—Praxis I Preparation
Members Only!
This session is designed to focus on test-taking tips and
strategies, resources, attitudes and dispositions
needed to help teacher candidates master the Praxis I
Assessment. Participants in this
session cover the 3 components of the Pre-Professional Skills
Test--reading, math, and writing.
Obtaining Licensure in North Carolina with Praxis II: NCAE
Praxis Series Workshops—Praxis II Preparation
This session is designed to focus on providing the necessary
test-taking tips and strategies, resources, attitudes and
dispositions needed to pass the Praxis II Assessment. Included
in the resources presented to participants are pedagogical
skills and knowledge about the Principles of Learning and
Teaching.
Supporting Mentors with Skill Sets Necessary for Supporting
New Teachers
New teachers with a Standard Professional 1 License in NC are
assigned a mentor teacher as part of their induction into the
teaching profession. This training provides best practices and
strategies for mentors to assist their beginning teachers in
surviving the first years of teaching using research-based and
data driven skills.
Working with Your Mentor—New Teacher Success!
New teachers with a Standard Professional 1 License in NC are
assigned a mentor teacher as part of their induction into the
teaching profession. Learn what to expect from classroom
observations as well as improved communication strategies for
working with someone in a mentoring role. This workshop focuses
on how you, the beginning teacher, can receive and utilize all
of the resources that are at your disposal as a newcomer to the
profession.
Stress and Time Management Strategies That Work!
Develop new time management skills that will benefit your
professional and personal life. Rediscover a healthier you as
you break the old patterns of being stressed and over-worked
while finding no time for yourself. This workshop provides
hands-on demonstration and role-playing.
Understanding How Your Personality and Communication Style
Impacts Your Classroom
Participants will discover how personality traits and
communication styles impact their work environment, and learn
how best to communicate with others as well as how to be
successful with students who have conflicting personality
traits.
Keeping Harmony with Parents/Guardians
Dealing with difficult parents can be one of the most
uncomfortable and unpleasant duties of an educator. This session
allows participants to review skills and strategies used by
colleagues to build positive relationships with parents. Parent
personality information will be provided, and role-plays to
generate helpful tips will be conducted.
Creating Strong Family-School-Community Partnerships
Many constituents, especially educators, have had little
experience in working with families and community beyond the
regular PTA functions. Participants create positive groundwork
for partnerships, learn how to improve communication among all
stakeholders, gain insight into how to work with families from
diverse cultures, and create a climate to implement meaningful
partnerships.
I Can Do It!
Tried and true with teachers across the nation! Participants
will learn about elements that will make a difference in their
teaching and management style. The training is very interactive
with practical hands-on information that all participants will
be able to use in the classroom immediately.
Intervention Techniques Supporting Student Learning
Participants will learn how to model self-confidence and a
positive disposition toward all students and co-workers and to
motivate students who give up when traditional teaching
practices do not meet their needs. Strategies shared are
research-based on the work of Rogers, Darnell, Williams, and
others.
MegaSkills® Essentials for Student Success! AND MegaSkills®
and the A Team Supporting Parents/Guardians in your Community
MegaSkills® help to support parents/guardians and educators by
providing strategies that work in improving academic and
behavioral performance. This staff development is based on the
research of Dr. Dorothy Rich and led by a certified MegaSkills®
trainer. Discover the 11 essential skills needed to support
students for success!
Bullying is NOT a Positive Character Trait!
Bullying should not be part of childhood, yet we know it exists
in our schools. This workshop will provide strategies to
implement in your classroom and school as well as to share with
parents/guardians.
Being a Culturally Competent Educator
Cultural groups and individual differences are influenced by
social, economic, political, and historical experiences which
shape learning and perception. Cultural background and
experience must be valued and connected to classroom learning.
Participants will become more aware of how to effectively and
competently provide instruction and support for cross-cultural
classrooms.
Team Building
Essentials—Strong School Improvement Teams
In this hands-on workshop, learn what it takes to create a
positive school climate and the traits that are necessary in
every team member. Participants will review the SIT policy and
legislation and learn how to become more empowered to do the
work of the school.
Reading,Writing and the Multiple Intelligences
This training begins with a fascinating discussion of the
“Multiple Intelligences”, but a workshop on M.I. would not be
complete without a demonstration of connections to actual
classroom instruction. Discover ways to improve student literacy
by tapping into their areas of strength, thereby making reading
and writing more relevant and engaging. Participants will
receive a wealth of sample lessons that can easily be
incorporated at most any grade level and subject area.
Best Practices for Implementing Literacy Across The
Elementary Curriculum
Elementary educators will receive strategies for successful
integration of reading and writing skills regardless of the
grade and/or subject(s) they teach. Strategies based on research
are provided to elementary educators to improve student
performance in writing, literacy, reading comprehension, and EOG
test scores.

Best Practices for Implementing Literacy Across The Secondary
Curriculum
This workshop will provide participants successful strategies
for improving the reading and writing abilities of their
students without straying from the standard course of study.
Literacy strategies relevant to all subject areas will be
provided.
Paideia—An Instructional Approach that Works
This session will provide educators with the tools necessary to
implement a Paideia, or Socratic seminar approach to learning.
Educators will discover that this instructional technique works
for all learners. This workshop includes coaching sessions with
modeling during follow-up visits.
Inclusion—It Can Work!
This session is one that is interactive as participants discover
tools to ensure a positive learning environment for all
students. Strategies developed by NEA research and NBCTs provide
educators with a solid foundation for a positive experience in
an inclusive setting. A video could be used to demonstrate how
an inclusive class could work.
Classroom Management—Tools for Success!
Every decision affecting students is part of classroom
management. The more tools one has in their tool box, the more
success the teacher and students will experience. Components of
this workshop include strategies and ideas for increasing
self-esteem, involving parents as partners, and teaching
students your classroom routine.
Grades are More Than Numbers and Letters—Strategies and
Modifications for Differentiated Instruction
Participants will explore the use of tiered assessments along
with their current differentiated assessments and/or
instruction. This session not only provides strategies to
motivate students to succeed, but also to prompt educators to
pause and reflect on their practice.
How to Teach for Rigor and Relevance: Using the International
Center for Leadership in Education Framework
This session will force you to reexamine your lesson plans and
how you teach. The skills and strategies used in the session
will be hands-on so you can use the new ideas immediately. This
is not an easy professional development area, but one that will
afford participants the opportunity to create relevant and
engaging lessons that support student learning.
Jumping In with Both Feet! Pursuing National Board
Certification
This session helps pre-NBC Candidates make a well-informed
decision on whether or not to pursue National Board
Certification.
National Board Certification for Initial Candidates
Participants gain tips and strategies for better understanding
how to complete the NBC Portfolio. Candidates will receive tips
on successful videotaping, reflective writing and using
standards language throughout the process.
NBC Workshop for Advanced Candidates
NCAE members who are Advanced Candidates receive advice, tips,
and strategies from NBCT's who needed more than one try to
obtain certification.
One More Time! Renewing Your National Board Certification
This session (open to members only) will help you get started on
the right track as an NBCT in pursuit of renewal.
